Cruise Control, Crooked Run Brewing (Sterling, VA)

It's not sexy. It's not popular. It's not what's now. As we shift out of a fall season that has shown utter disdain for seasonal beers the likes I haven't since I started opining, this should be the time to start getting into stouts. Most of our faithful readers know that this is where a lot of brewers across The Commonwealth shine on the national stage. Don't worry, we'll get to all those. But I didn't want to get too far into the season without talking about this beer. I usually start all my pilsner reviews the same way: complaining…

Shower Beer, Champion Brewing Co. (Charlottesville, VA)

I missed the East Coast.  The trees, the gentle breezes, the ocean...  Zeus Almighty, did I miss the ocean!  After a year of dodging tornadoes and running headlong into literally quadirectional winds, that first quaff of salt-laden air erased months of longing.  Just in time for summer, I've had to bide my time and not load up on every Virginia beer in sight because there's unfinished business.  See, a year ago as I hit Kansas, I put the finishing touches on a plethora of reviews that you may have read in the time since.  It was also Virginia Craft Beer…

2016-2017 Beer In Review: Beers of the Year

1 year ago     1409 Views     Comments Off on 2016-2017 Beer In Review: Beers of the Year

I had mentioned in casual conversation the other day to my wife that we've been putting articles together for our 3rd Anniversary of Virginia Brew Review, and she looked at me like "Y'all been doing this for how long?" Yep, it has been that long.  Three years ago this week, three dudes set out to talk about the craft beer scene in the Commonwealth.  And while we continue to all balance real lives from fun lives, we are still able to push forward and begin to celebrate as we always do:  by giving out some hardware (or is it software?)…

I've enjoyed a nice solid vacation down south while fellow VBR's Alex has been manning the articles and Ben has been on our other social media platforms. But the time to relax is over. It is August, which means it is Virginia Craft Beer Month. While we celebrate Virginia brews year round, this month is a great opportunity for the Commonwealth to really get the Virginia brand out there. And of course, we are going to do our part by pushing out a ton of content and extensive coverage of the biggest party of the year at the Virginia Craft Brewers Festival.…

3-4-5 Pilsner, Spencer Devon Brewing (Fredericksburg, VA)

Sometimes it is the unexpected twists and turns that make life interesting. Start with horrible Friday traffic on I-95. As my wife and I were heading to DC to meet up with the rest of the VBR staff, we decided to take 301 instead. Feeling hungry after a few hours on the road, we pulled off into Fredericksburg to grab a bite and on our way back to our car, we stumbled upon a brewery we had not heard of. My wife, at the time, thought that I had planned it all out, but I was just as astounded as…

BR: Pils, Hardywood Park Craft Brewery (Richmond, VA)

It's kind of hard to get people on board with Pilsner. Too many craft beer drinkers see the word and want to associate it with the macrobreweries and don't want to even spend a nickel on them. The problem with that is there has been a surge this year, or at least a surge to me, of Virginia Breweries getting behind the German Style Pilsners by brewing them the right way with quality 'craft' ingredients. Even then, it is tough to shake public expectation of what a good pilsner should taste like or getting them to commit to one that…
