Everyone has their ‘go-tos’, from favorite shirts and hats to late night orders at Taco Bell. It usually is a product of establishing a comfort zone, having something to fall back on whilst exploring other opportunities. When I first came across this Alter Ego Saison, I thought it was a decent choice, but nothing over the top. But as I keep coming back to it, it has grown on me as just a impeccable example in Farmhouse Ale 101.

Alter Ego Saison, Smarthmouth Brewing Company (Norfolk, VA)
Farmhouse Ale/Saison, ABV: 5.3%

Presentation: Tap pour into chalice.

Appearance: Orange to sunset, cloudy, minimal white head that dissipates quickly.

Taste: What you are looking for in a saison is a decent fruit and spice notes with a little malt finish, and this beer hits all three right on the head. Orange zest right up front, white pepper finish on the back. And boy is this a smooth beer. A lot of saisons you really have to commit yourself to, this one is super laid back.

ABV: This is on the lower end of ABV for saison, which is the big reason that this is a very smooth farmhouse ale.

Overall: Smartmouth knows what it has here, so much so that they are putting it in cans. Yep, with the summer coming up, this is a great move in my opinion, perfect for cooler beers. Better yet, head on out to a crab or shrimp boil and take a few of these along. You will not be disappointed.

Score: 8.4
