Late last week, VBR got a sneak peek inside look at The Black Squirrel‘s new Dunn Loring, VA location in the Shops at the Avenir Place. Currently completing the build out, the new location should open sometime in late May. Amy Bowman, President of The Black Squirrel, gave me a tour as several craftsmen kept hard at work to meet their opening goal. The downtown DC location in Adams Morgan holds a place in local craft beer lore as one of the original craft beer hot spots in the District.
Their new location, mere steps from the Dunn Loring Metro station, looks to recapture the downtown location’s neighborhood bar feel, while also providing a more open restaurant space. Residing in a prime corner spot on Gallows Road, the new Black Squirrel should prove an easy walk for anyone living in the Mosaic or Merrifield/Dunn Loring neighborhoods, as well as those hiking and biking along the nearby Washington and Old Dominion Trail.
Ms. Bowman expects to seat about 130 in the combined dining room and bar, with 26 draft lines fed by a cold room just inches away through the wall in order to minimize undesired foaming. As for the menu, “We’ll have our burgers and mac and cheese, but everything will have a Virginia focus, with local ingredients,” such as Virginia ham, Ms. Bowman said. The Virginia focus doesn’t stop at the food menu however. Black Squirrel is meeting with as many Virginia brewers as possible, and expects to carry a mostly Virginia tap list, with a goal of carrying brewers that you might not see at other places. Additionally, the staff includes wine and spirits aficionados, and Ms. Bowman expects to offer Virginia-produced offerings there as well.
The Black Squirrel will offer growler fills for both 32 and 64 ounce growlers. “Everything is about getting through kegs fast in order to keep the beer fresh,” she explained. And in a departure from the downtown location, The Black Squirrel in Dunn Loring will offer lunch as well as brunch menus.
More to come after opening, but The Black Squirrel looks to be an exciting addition to the Dunn Loring neighborhood!
