Metro Red, Port City Brewing Co. (Alexandria, VA)

Port City has built a strategy around a stable lineup of solid, reliable beers across a fairly broad spectrum.  Imagine our surprise, then, when they announced last summer that for DC Beer Week they would be serving up an exclusive, one-time beer for one of the events at the National Building Museum.  We couldn't get there, but were delighted when the illusive Metro Red made a surprise appearance during the Scavenger Hunt event.  We dug it, but the exclusivity kept us from doing a feature on the brew.  Third time being the charm, we sat down to lunch on April…

I've accepted that I'm moving to Kansas next week.  Just for a year, mind you, but along with the whole life upheaval thing I've gotten a number of questions about how I'll keep contributing here at VBR.  Fear not!  Instead of packing that past few months I've been on a singular mission to track down as much of my to-do list (including some old New Beer Resolutions) as possible.  The result is a fairly deep queue of reviews that are already written, a slew of tasting notes from visits (including a final few in the next several days), bottles to…

If there's one way in which a beer can truly transcend itself, it's when the pour is so fresh you may as well have dived into the fermentation barrels.  A lot of breweries include the tapped or bottling date to give you an idea of the freshness, and I've had a beverage manager stare at me quizzically when I tried to reserve a sixtel for "a few weeks" while we played kill the keg on another one at home (hey, you snag one of the handful that get distributed to the general public in a given year and see what…

While we travel around this great Commonwealth a lot covering all of the craft beer in the state, once a year we get to meet up with the same crazy people who do the same thing in other parts of the country. That's right, we are less than a month away from heading to the annual Beer Bloggers & Writers Conference. Last year, we invaded Asheville, North Carolina and it was like nothing else. Between the food, talks, commodity, and also just a little bit of beer, we had an experience of a lifetime. This year we are seasoned veterans,…

Choosy Mother, Isley Brewing Company (Richmond, VA)

Wrapping up our Richmond weekend reviews is one that should surprise no one from Central Virginia. I completely understand the weather is now starting to catch up to the calendar, and I usually keep the porter/stout reviews chained in the basement, watching black and white pirate movies, and eating Baby Ruths until at least October, but this one is too good. While new-ish styles of beer comes and go, the Commonwealth has been inundated with a version of this brew from a state up north for a while, not fully knowing that there is a better product stateside. The…

So it's not just a clever name. You hear about new places and you hear some hype from various sources. Another brewery, another knock-your-socks off beer, another clone of SuperCraftBeer from EvenHarderToFindBrewery in Coolsville. And you give in. "Fine. I'm going now. Lay off." Thankfully, your childhood knowledge of the city allows you to find the place with relative ease. You find a super cool interior and trendy clientele (you know the ones that see you walk in the door and a record skips, but make fun of you cause you were around when records and that analogy were…

Nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition!!! (Or VBR on several road trips to Richmond and back.) Last weekend, I was able to get up to the Commonwealth's capital to earn some brownie points with the misses at or former wedding venue, and spend them all hitting up some breweries in town. Thus this begins the run of Richmond beers that we have the pleasure of reviewing. First up is one I found the most interesting in it's simplicity. I took a few growlers home from every stop, knowing that I was going to share the bounty with friends over the Memorial…
