We have circumnavigated the Oktoberfest season and are now in a brief window before we go full winter stout. This transition was clearly noted in my last stop to the beer store. A few weeks ago, zee Germans had a pretty strong hold on shelf space with the local marzens peppered into the unfilled spaces. Last weekend however, it was like a complete transformation and a greater variety of beers had popped up. If it wasn't for limited car space, I would have backed the SUV up and taken the aisle away with me. Instead, I decided to focus on…

Sessions in the Abyss, Fair Winds Brewing (Lorton, VA)

I have to admit to being quite spoiled up here in the NOVA area.  I've lived within either a 10-15 minute walk or drive to a half-dozen craft breweries and gastropubs over the past few years, and can easily get to twice that many again in 40-45 minutes.  And while it's taken some time for local watering holes to catch onto the almost embarrassing plethora of fantastic beers we're inundated with in this market, they've finally evolved from asking, "¿Jefe, what is a plethora?"  Even better, friends and co-workers are (ahem) hopping onto this seeming bandwagon of local suds.  This…

For some craft beer festivals, the "VIP" experience is just an extra hour and a handful of additional tickets.  Purchase wisely.  For others, you get exclusive access to select brews plus the chance to mingle with the brewers themselves.  When we visited the VA Craft Brewers Festival in August, we stopped for extended chats with over a dozen brewers, but one which stuck out for me was Old Ox.  President Chris Burns was among the staff in attendance, and with nary a soul in sight I picked his brain on a few of their many delicious concoctions.  Among those is…

40 Mile To The Border, Three Notch’d Brewing & O’Connor Brewing (Charlottesville/Norfolk, VA)

One thing we haven't done a lot of is review collabs. By our count we are somewhere just north of 110 reviews in about a year and a half, but only one has been a collab (If you can find it, we'll give you a prize! No kidding.) Not searching to really change that, I came across this beer during my hiatus in Charlottesville a few weeks ago. What makes this one great is that the sum of its parts makes it a really outstanding beer. 40 Mile To The Border, Three Notch'd Brewing & O'Connor Brewing (Charlottesville/Norfolk, VA) American…

Tailgate Throwdown: Oktoberfestbier, Boise St.-UVa (9/25/15)

We had never before had a Friday night game in Charlottesville, and never before had we planned such an ambitious lineup for a Tailgate Throwdown.  In the midst of Oktoberfest, we once again could not deny ourselves a sampling of one of the most robust (and popular) seasonal types.  Granted, there are some variations which keep your Märzens apart from your Vienna Lagers, but verdammt if they aren't both delicious.  Hamilton did challenge me to find Märzens, so we scouted around for bottles and potential growler fills alike with a keen focus on in-state brews.  While it's not part of…
