Friday Night Flights: UK Style Ales, Mad Fox (Falls Church, VA)

With the brood heading out to England today, it only felt appropriate to spend some time getting to know a few of the styles I'll be surrounded with over the next few weeks.  Thankfully, the crew at Mad Fox had me covered with nearly half the available brews featuring an English or Scottish recipe (including ingredients).  Heck, the server even called me "love" at one point.  After the offered four-beer flight, I ventured off my normal beer-beaten path with some delightful results. Peach Tripel, Hardywood Park Craft Brewery (Richmond, VA)

I mentioned in my last review that we went to a few beer release parties over Memorial Day Weekend, 2 to be exact. This would be the 2nd. As our lovely and patient wives were out shopping, we had a solid hour to kill before we could meet up with them. And thanks to our trusty GPS, we were not far away from Hardywood, so we ran in and scouted the place out, immediately getting ourselves into the line for this year's version of Peach Tripel.       Peach Tripel, Hardywood Park Craft Brewery (Richmond, VA) Belgian Tripel, ABV: 8.2%,…

Guarded By Monkeys, Strangeways Brewing Company (Richmond, VA)

As we wound our way through Richmond last weekend, a few definitive plans were on our schedule. One of them was to catch some beer release parties, which are always a blast. But when one is a release party at Strangeways, you never know what you are going to get. And that is the best part. Through the custom cars and live music, we worked our way into the tasting room to get our hands on this new beer from their 'Sours & Wilds' collection and found it to be a little of both. If you we not able to follow our Memorial Day tour Virginia Beer & Breweries, let the next series of reviews (and we have a bunch) be your guide to the summer beer & new releases of the season. We were able to get to Norfolk and Richmond for a two day excursion of 9 different stops, each with their own unique beer and story. This stop found us in....Harbor Park?!? Beer and sports go together like bribes and FIFA, but you tend to find a large amount of brewery/sports team collaborations centered around baseball. When we saw the outfield banner…

We Went There: Old 690 Brewing Co. (Hillsboro, VA)

What does a dreary Saturday + VBR crew reunion + a set of New Beer Resolutions equal?  An excuse to visit some new breweries!  After spending some quality time with the Ashburn scene the last few months, we decided to trek out to the Leesburg/Purcellville area for a couple of stops.  Given the presence of a libertarian/anarchist in our midst, our first stop was, of course, to a farm brewery which had to challenge local zoning regulations just to stay in business.  That's right, when Old 690 opened in August 2014, they were slapped with a citation which put them…

Meridian Kolsch, Lost Rhino Brewing Company (Ashburn, VA)

One of the joys of having a kegerator of delicious, cold, fresh Virginia craft beer is that as the beer ages and mellows out a bit, the flavor profile evolves from the 1st to the 10th, 20th, even 40th beer.  Well, unless you're hosting an intergalactic kegger, and then I imagine they'll all taste pretty similar (and you'll be tapped out inside of an hour).  The first two kegs I went through didn't see this sort of change, but the current round (which also includes the most excellent Forge Saison/Farmhouse Ale) has definitely pulled off a few parlor tricks on…

Craft beer festivals are a great way to try new beer. It is an opportunity for breweries to show a microcosm of what they have to offer, whether it be year round flagship beers or seasonal releases. Back a few weeks ago, we attended the Mariner's Museum Craft Beer Festival and had that opportunity to do just that with a few local suds slingers. But rule number 1 (okay, more like rule 26) of writing reviews is that you don't get the best notes or representation of the beer when you are running around with thousands of your closest friends.…

Capital Trail Pale Ale, Hardywood Park Craft Brewery (Richmond, VA)

I'm a sucker for beers with a cause, especially ones that hit close to home. As half of my family lives Williamsburg and the other half lives in Richmond, the congested I-64 'holiday' travels usually pushes me out to Route 5. This road has been constantly updated over the years with the addition of the Capital Trail, which is a separate bike/walk path that stretches from Jamestown to Richmond. The Virginia Capital Trail Foundation has been funding the entire operation and they are about 100 days away from completing their multi-year project. While they are still raising money to pay…

We've been gone a little while, but as you can see, the results were well worth it. Virginia Brew Review has moved into the 2.0 era, with a new design for our 2nd year around. Besides the new look, we have a ton of flexibility to expand a lot of what we were doing and what we will be doing coming up. But none of this stopped us from taking notes on some great beer around the state. Last weekend, we got our hands on a seasonal release from the Blue Mountain Barrel House Series and while we found one…

As spring is trying to push it's head through the first day of May, we find ourselves changing those tap handles over from the stouts and DIPAs of the winter to Saisons and Wits of the spring. The first beer reviewed on this site was a farmhouse ale right around this time a year ago. So it is only fitting that on our anniversary tour of breweries, we run across another review worthy saison. Apricot Saison (Ghost 191), Adroit Theory Brewing Company (Purcellville, VA) Saison/Farmhouse Ale, ABV: 8.7%, IBU: 39 Presentation: Tap pour into tulep. Appearance: Slightly hazy, peach to orange color…
